Up the Garden Path: The Development of Horticulture and Nurseries in and around the Sherborne Area

09 February 2017

Raleigh Hall, Digby Road, Sherborne, Dorset, DT9 3NL

Today the gardener has access to diverse outlets for the selection of plants and seeds, including garden centres, nurseries, supermarkets, plant stalls and mail order. Comprehensive advice is readily available from television, radio, the internet and journals. However, what was the situation in earlier times?

Our speaker, George Tatham, explains how agricultural and horticultural societies such as the Sherborne, Yeovil and Weymouth Horticultural Society developed in parallel from the early 1800s, while a six-acre nursery is shown on the 1832 map of Sherborne. References in local newspapers and probate material reveal further evidence of commercial agencies. Information gleaned from these sources, and trade lists can uncover the wide variety of plants available to the discerning Sherborne gardener.

Doors open at 2pm. Entry at the door for non-members £5 (students £2). Tea and cake provided.
