Sherborne Museum Talk: ‘Shire Hall Museum - 150 Years of Courtroom Drama’
05 January 2023
Digby Memorial Church Hall, Digby Road, Sherborne, DT9 3NL
Shire Hall was the centre of justice and local government from 1797 to 1955. The Georgian courtroom was the scene of famous and infamous trials throughout this period, from the internationally significant Tolpuddle Martyrs, to Martha Brown, reputed to be the inspiration for Hardy’s Tess of the D’Ubervilles. Most fascinating are the stories of the ordinary Dorset men, women and children who found themselves in the dock during the 19th century. From child criminals, to smugglers, habitual con women and the folk of Sherborne, this talk by Anne Brown will look at some of these stories alongside a history of the building
Doors open from 1.30pm. Admission is free for members of Sherborne Museum; £5 for visitors. Light refreshments included.
