St Margaret’s Hospice Light Up a Life 2022

St Margaret’s Hospice is inviting people across Somerset to come together and be part of this year’s Light Up a Life campaign.

Traditionally, Light Up a Life is the time when the hospice invites the local community to gather in churches across the county for a simple service of remembrance. But, after more people were able to access the service in previous years when we were forced to stream it, the hospice has now decided to keep the virtual format for 2022.

As well as the service in December, the hospice is inviting families across Somerset to share the names of their loved ones in remembrance and celebration on our Virtual Night Sky where members of the community can dedicate a star in memory of a loved one and donate to the hospice.

The Railway Children Return (cert PG)

It's 1944 and World War 2 is raging. Bobbie (Jenny Agutter), one of the original Railway Children but by now a grandmother, welcomes a group of evacuees from Salford to her home in Yorkshire.

One day they encounter a young African American GI (Kenneth Aikens) who, like them, is far away from home, and who is hiding from the authorities.

The film contains more than enough heart, humour, and spirited performances from its young cast to prove a charming update on the original, while also tackling some interesting themes that will resonate with today's audiences in different ways.
Radio Times

It's an amiable and ingenious tribute to the innocent, good-natured spirit of the original.
The Guardian

Effectively piling nostalgia upon nostalgia upon nostalgia into a triple-layered Victorian sponge of particularly English sweetness, this good-natured, resolutely old-fashioned film will likely make any adults who grew up on Jefferies' original a little misty-eyed.

Tickets will be available for sale from Thursday 1st December, exclusively from Wayne Pullen, Family Butcher of High Street, Milborne Port. Ticket prices have been maintained (£5.00 per person in advance, and £6.00 on the door). As usual, a limited wine and beer bar will be available, and for this season, we are able to accept payment for "on the door" tickets by credit or debit card.

Sherborne Museum Talk: ‘Shire Hall Museum - 150 Years of Courtroom Drama’

Shire Hall was the centre of justice and local government from 1797 to 1955. The Georgian courtroom was the scene of famous and infamous trials throughout this period, from the internationally significant Tolpuddle Martyrs, to Martha Brown, reputed to be the inspiration for Hardy’s Tess of the D’Ubervilles. Most fascinating are the stories of the ordinary Dorset men, women and children who found themselves in the dock during the 19th century. From child criminals, to smugglers, habitual con women and the folk of Sherborne, this talk by Anne Brown will look at some of these stories alongside a history of the building

Doors open from 1.30pm. Admission is free for members of Sherborne Museum; £5 for visitors. Light refreshments included.
