Dream Horse (Certificate PG)

Janet Vokes, a former whippet breeder and pigeon fancier from the depressed Welsh village of Cefn Fforest organises a community syndicate to buy a racehorse. The drinkers at Jan’s local chipped in a weekly £10 sub and their horse, symbolically called Dream Alliance, wound up winning the Welsh Grand National, basically making it the Seabiscuit of the valleys.

Toni Collette (as Jan) and Owen Teale (as her husband Brian), with Damian Lewis playing Howard Davies, the local tax accountant and breezy man-of-the-world whose dangerously addictive love of horseracing inspires Jan. The resulting movie may be a bit schmaltzy – actually, a lot schmaltzy – but you cannot help enjoying it: like Chariots of Fire, only with horses.

This movie gets a real gallop on, due to the sheer warmth of its performances. Collette, that perennially excellent actor who utterly inhabits every part, gives us a wonderfully approachable Jan: shy, yet tough and determined. Lewis is robust and yet very sympathetic as the rakish Howard who has come very close in the past to losing his shirt to the sport of kings. And it is a treat to see Joanna Page as Howard’s wife Angela and a cameo for Siân Phillips as Maureen, a local woman with a passion for Tunnock’s Tea Cakes.

The Courier (Certificate 12A)

With the nuclear arsenal of the Soviet Union growing stronger by the day, and Soviet First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev and the United States President John F. Kennedy locking horns against the backdrop of the Cold War and the reckless nuclear arms race, highly decorated Colonel Oleg Penkovsky reaches out to MI6 and the CIA.

Under those grave circumstances, MI6 agent, Dickie Franks, and CIA official, Emily Donovan, approach a civilian, the unsuspecting, globe-trotting British businessman, Greville Maynard Wynne, to act as a liaison between the parties, and courier Penkovsky's leaks: vital information necessary to avert nuclear Armageddon.

In exchange, the United States government would help him and his family defect.

However, does Wynne know what he's let himself in for? Above all, can the two men put a halt to the imminent Cuban Missile Crisis?

The French Dispatch (Certificate 15)

From the director of The Grand Budapest Hotel, and sharing its idiosyncratic visual and narrative style, The French Dispatch is a portmanteau film. It brings to life a collection of stories from the final issue of a fictional American magazine published in Ennui-SurBlasé, a fictional 20th-century French city. Starring a host of Anderson regulars - Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan – it’s an eccentric delight.

“Anderson’s new film has, on the strength of the extensively picked-apart trailer, been condemned as more of the same. To which I can only say … sure, yes, more fun, more buoyancy, more elegance, more marvellously eccentric invention, more originality. It might not be at the very zenith of what he can achieve but for sheer moment-by-moment pleasure, and for laughs, this is a treat.”
Peter Bradshaw,
The Guardian

“Apart from Ernst Lubitsch or Jacques Tati, it’s hard to imagine another director who has put this level of effort into crafting a comedy, where every costume, prop and casting choice has been made with such a reverential sense of absurdity. If that sounds airless or exhausting, think again: Sure, it takes work to unpack, but the ensemble ensures that Anderson’s humorous creations feel human.”

Spencer (Certificate 12)

The marriage of Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) and Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. There's eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. But this year, things will be profoundly different. Spencer is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days.

“Playing out over three excruciating days at Sandringham – from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day – and carried shoulder high by a note-perfect Kristen Stewart, Spencer (the very title of which seems to present a challenge to the House of Windsor) dances between ethereal ghost story, arch social satire and no-holds-barred psychodrama, while remaining at heart a paean to motherhood.”
Mark Kermode

“Unbalanced and unjust, Spencer is nonetheless perversely gripping.”
The New Yorker
