The Duke (cert 12A)

In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60-year-old taxi driver, stole Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. He sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly. What happened next became the stuff of legend. An uplifting true story about a good man who set out to change the world and managed to save his marriage.

It's a delightful, gentle British comedy, and it stars Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. What more could you ask for?.

It's a beautifully designed film blending newsreel footage to create evocative images of London in the 1960s...
Jim Broadbent delivers a spotless performance as the everyman biting back at the system.
A fine cast provide sterling support in a film that ends too quickly. Times change but not always for the better, and we often sacrifice important values in the name of progress..
The Duke proves that some old fashioned ways are still relevant today. A delightful film that will get nowhere near the attention it deserves.
UK Film Review.

It is Broadbent and Mirren who are the beating heart of this delightful film.

Downton Abbey: A new era (cert PG)

The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess' newly inherited villa.

Meanwhile, strapped for cash and faced with a leaking roof, Lady Mary decides to allow a film crew to use the Abbey as the setting for their latest picture.

The sequel still rests most of its extravagant weight on cozy familiarity. Yet, Fellowes manages to navigate Downton Abbey to charm both reactionaries and revolutionaries, finagling a sequence that allows the staff to usurp the formal dining room while the rich serve themselves at a buffet.

The inversion gently rocks the boat, with no threat of tipping it over.
The New York Times

Downton Abbey is a really well-dressed, well-acted, well-produced, uptight soap opera.
Droll dialogue, stunning locales and exquisite costuming elevate each scene to something more than a guilty pleasure.

The Railway Children Return (cert PG)

It's 1944 and World War 2 is raging. Bobbie (Jenny Agutter), one of the original Railway Children but by now a grandmother, welcomes a group of evacuees from Salford to her home in Yorkshire.

One day they encounter a young African American GI (Kenneth Aikens) who, like them, is far away from home, and who is hiding from the authorities.

Click here to view the trailer on YouTube (a new browser window will open)

The film contains more than enough heart, humour, and spirited performances from its young cast to prove a charming update on the original, while also tackling some interesting themes that will resonate with today's audiences in different ways.
Radio Times

It's an amiable and ingenious tribute to the innocent, good-natured spirit of the original.
The Guardian

Effectively piling nostalgia upon nostalgia upon nostalgia into a triple-layered Victorian sponge of particularly English sweetness, this good-natured, resolutely old-fashioned film will likely make any adults who grew up on Jefferies' original a little misty-eyed.
