Parish Plan Adopted.
Following almost two years of work, the Parish Plan steering committee held two workshops with the Parish Council in February/March after which the plan has been adopted by the council. The steering committee will now put the plan before the District Council for their endorsement.
The full plan can be seen here
Hard copies will be shortly available in the library and Town Hall. It is, however, a rather lengthy document because it includes all the evidence that we have collected. For this reason a somewhat more “digestible” summary document is in preparation and will be published shortly.
The development of the Parish Plan has involved many in the village in interviews, open days, questionnaires and workshops. We would like to thank all those who have participated and shared their own vision for the Parish.
Of course a plan is nothing without action and the Parish Council will be forming an action forum to guide the implementation of the plan. This forum will create action groups for specific actions in the plan. Villagers who have a passion for specific aspects of the plan and who would like to become involved should contact Jackie Freeman in the Town Hall to identify their interests.

To kick off the development of the Parish Plan, in June we sent a simple questionnaire to every house in the Parish. About 22% of households responded to the questionnaire; many thanks to all who contributed. It may seem that we have done nothing with the information but this is far from the case.
You told us that the top four concerns in the Parish were Highways, Shopping, Environment and Services with other issues such as crime, countryside coming further down the list of concerns.
The steering group have subsequently formed three working teams to look at these issues, bringing them into three broad themes, being economy, environment and community. We are working on developing materials so that we can have some more focussed interventions with as many in the parish as possible to discuss the issues you have raised. Before we do that, however, we realise that we need more hard data, particularly about the economic workings of the parish. Accordingly, several of the steering group recently attended a workshop led by a member of the New Economics Foundation in order to understand more of how a small parish such as Milborne can ensure sustainability. This will be followed up by a small project aimed at providing the hard data that we need. We have already secured funds from the district council to enable this; something of a first in South Somerset.
Please watch out for more updates in the Parish Magazine and on the Milborne Port website (www.milborneport.com). In the meantime, if you have any comments or observations, please get in touch with us via Jackie Freeman at the Parish Council.
Update July 2008
Thank you to everyone who completed the recent Future of Milborne Port Questionnaire, and to those of you who volunteered to help with the newly formed Parish Plan steering Committee. As we said in the questionnaire, this is just the first step. We wanted to find out what you think are the key issues for Milborne Port over the next decades.
Here are the results:
241 households responded. This was 429 individuals. A very pleasing response.
You could put a score from 1 to 4 against each of the key issues. If a topic had been scored "1" by all 429 respondents it would score 429. If a topic had been scored "4" by all 429 respondents it would score 1716. These are therefore the minimum and maximum scores.
These are the scores for each key issue, in rank order:
Highways 1490, Shopping 1457, Environment 1418, Services 1416, Crime 1386, Countryside 1361, Health 1285, Transport 1274, Housing 1179, Social 1165, Employment 1153, Education 1074.
This list can now be used by the steering committee to do some more detailed work. We will concentrate on the issues that came top of the list and look in more detail at what your needs and concerns are, and what it might be possible to do.
You'll hear more from us later in the year.
The Steering Committee is just a group of interested people and we've only just started this project. If you could help in any way please contact Pam Alexander, telephone 250654, email pamalexander@btinternet.com.

Introduction
Milborne Port is in the process of producing a Parish Plan. This will hopefully enable the village to play a bigger part in running its affairs and influencing the shape of future development (within Government policy) It is supported by the Parish and District Councils but will be developed and produced by village volunteers. A steering committee has been formed and an initial questionnaire is being delivered to all households in the parish to establish what key issues residents are most concerned about. Click here for the Questionnaire on line. There will be further opportunities for residents to get involved throughout the plan process. For further information please contact Pam Alexander on 01963 250654 or e-mail pamalexander@btinternet.com
THANK YOU to everyone who returned the shopping & services questionnaire that was delivered in 2006 to all households in Milborne Port and surrounding hamlets which use shops and services in Milborne Port. A total of approx. 1200 surveys were delivered by members of the Parish Council and 398 responses were received, giving a “good” response rate of 33%. The results of the questionnaire were very helpful in proving the need for a new supermarket in the village - planning consent has now been granted for a store at the bottom of West Hill.
