"Men In General"

Is a mix of cappella classics with comedy, advice on relationships, what not to wear and the tender side of blokedom. Includes highly interactive flights of fancy. Fast moving and funny.

A five-piece force of male vocal antics not to be missed. The show includes indoor parachute jumping, a road movie, the benefits of going barefoot, a painting by Edward Hopper, unusual hobbies for men, a pub at midnight and mistakes anyone could make.

"Men in General" features members from some amazing other musical outfits; The Singing Sous’ Chefs, Three Choirs Festival Chorus and Australian sensation, The Spooky Men’s Chorale. They have come together as Men in General to perform comedy and sing top lyrics from Billy Joel, Lou Reed, Marvin Gaye, Joe Jackson, Rodgers & Hammerstein, The Beach Boys and other well known favourites.

The Imitation Game (Certificate 12A)

Milborne Port Movies, in conjunction with Somerset Moviola, are showing the film "The Imitation Game" (Certificate 12A)

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of 'gross indecency', an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offence of homosexuality - little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing.

Based on the real-life story of Alan Turing, who is credited with cracking the German Enigma code, “The Imitation Game” portrays the nail-biting race against time undertaken by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain's top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of the Second World War.

Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war and saved thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British establishment, but his work and legacy live on.

The Imitation Game stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing and Keira Knightley as close friend and fellow code-breaker Joan Clarke with some scenes filmed locally at Sherborne School.

Milborne Port Opera –“Spring Fate” by Neil Edwards

Milborne Port Opera is staging a new work by MPO member  Neil Edwards, a talented writer, composer and arranger. “Spring Fate” is his third play to be put on at Milborne Port. It is comedy musical theatre from the Edwardian age at its best. Lovely music, great choral singing and some stunning solo songs from an award-winning company. It will also be very funny. Think a spying mystery set to music in Downton Abbey, with some “Allo Allo” and “Carry on” humour thrown in.

The story is irrelevant (almost), but it concerns a gaggle of foreign spies masquerading as guests or performers at a grand country house party, trying  to steal British state secrets from the aristocratic owners. Will they get away with it?  Great characters, great music and a lot of laughs.

The show is being staged straight after Easter. April 8-11. Ticket price will be £10.00.

Tickets go on sale in March. Obtainable from the Post Office, Wayne's,  and from the MPO box office

My Old Lady (Certificate 12A)

Milborne Port Movies, in conjunction with Somerset Moviola, are showing the film "My Old Lady" (Certificate 12A)

Mathias (Kevin Kline) is a down-and-out New Yorker who travels to Paris to liquidate a huge, valuable apartment he has inherited from his estranged father.

Once there, however, he discovers a refined old woman Mathilde (Maggie Smith) living in the apartment with her daughter Chloé (Kristin Scott Thomas).

Mathias quickly learns that the apartment is a “viager” – an ancient French system for buying and selling apartments – and that he will not actually get possession of the apartment until Mathilde dies.
While working with a Parisian real-estate dealer (Dominique Pinon), to sell his contract for the apartment, Mathias discovers that Mathilde and his father were lovers for more than 50 years.
